Most Segregated Cities For Latinos in 2000
Filed Under Original Essays and Analysis, Race and Racism, Sociology, Uncategorized by Rachel
This post is a follow-up to an earlier post, you can look at this post from? July 2nd? where I discuss the different dimensions of residential segregation.? That post discusses a few of the methodological issues, and it links to the Census Bureau report where the data comes from.? So if you are confused about the differences, between? clustering and exposure (for example), you can get more information from that post.? If you link to the actual Census report, they show statistical formulas that are used in calculating segregation using each method described.? They also discuss other issues related to measuring segregation.?
You should also keep in mind this is only measuring segregation for Latinos, and it’s only measuring urban segregation.? I am preparing future posts on? Asians and Native Americans, and you? can read the previous posts on the most and least segregated cities for blacks.? I the analysis of Latinos only 36? metro areas? met the Census criteria for analysis–the number was 43 metros for blacks.
All data comes from the US Census Bureau
5 Least Even Metro Areas (cities where Latinos are least evenly spread; the number is the percent of people who would have to move for the group to be evenly distributed across the metro area)
- Providence
- New York
- Newark
- Hartford
- Los Angeles
5 Lowest Exposure Metros (cities where? Latinos have lowest chance of having contact with whites)
- Miami?
- Los Angeles
- New York
- San Antonio
- Houston
5 Most Concentrated Metros (cities where? Latinos are most densely concentrated/least spread throughout the metro area)
- Riverside, San Bernardino, CA
- Phoenix, Mesa
- New York
- San Antonio
- Houston
5 Most Centralized Cities (cities where? Latinos are closest to the central core of the city)
- Denver
- Phoenix, Mesa
- Minneapolis, St. Paul
- Kansas City
- New Orleans
5 Most Clustered Cities
- Chicago
- Newark
- Orange County, CA
- Philadelphia
- Los Angeles
Overall Most Segregated (Averaging ranks for all 5 major dimensions) Drumroll…..
- New York
- Providence, Fall River, Warwick
- Phoenix, Mesa
- Los Angeles
- Newark? and Chicago (tie)
- Denver
- Houston and Riverside, San Bernardino (tie)
- Dallas
- San Antonio
- Milwaukee, Waukesha
A few points for discussion:
The high scores for northeastern cities reflect the high levels of segregation for Puerto Ricans, and to a lesser extent Dominicans.? I don’t know the exact data for this, but my suspicion is that Puerto Ricans and Dominicans have segregation levels that are closer to blacks than Mexican Americans and other Central and South Americans.? In fact, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans often live in close proximity to blacks, and the demographics that I am aware of for Puerto Ricans? are often more similar to Blacks than? they are to other Latino groups.?
Latinos tend to be most segregated in metro areas in the northeast (more Puerto Ricans)? and the southwest (more Mexican Americans and Central Americans).
Finally, these numbers tend to reflect much lower levels of segregation than blacks, and higher levels than Asians and Native Americans.

are you going to post them for all ethnic groups?
this series of posts is really awesome, by the way, and very thought provoking.
Yep, I’ll post them for each group.
Not really surprising…Puerto Ricans/Dominicans and Mexicans may all speak Spanish, but the historical paradigms are entirely different. Mexicans are not a colonized minority residing in the United States as a result of colonial incursions into a former slave outpost…Hardly…they’re the descendants of a nation with aspirations for empire which sought to compete with the United States for domination of the hemisphere.
Those hegemonic attempts were unsuccessful, but there is a great deal of pride in many circles about that surge for power. It’s a little different in PR and the DR. There is no legacy - like Mexico and Haiti of expelling a colonial master at the end of a gun. Nope…there is only the gradual incorporation of its largely defenseless populace into the fell clutches of a successor.
It’s not surprising at all. I’m sure you’re aware of all this - just sharing…it’s been awhile.

wow, Florida has several areas on the least segregated list and none on the most segregated. Interesting. But I’d wager a bet that that’s different for African Americans. I bet we’re quite segregated there. I sure think gainesville is!

Being from Houston, that is a pretty good assessment. Houston is highly segregated, however, they are changing. There are two major factors, one gentrification - developers are working very hard to bring in the whites back into the city, therefore, property values are on the rise. Second, the Katrina effect still plays a major role. Areas where there were large concentration of Latinos are now mixed and believe, before Katrina, each ethnic group stayed in their own enclave. Down here, we do have a fierce ethnic battles between Latinos and African Americans.
It would be interesting to see what Houston would be like in 2010.
I find your work valuable in many ways. Fall River appears in both of your studies, as one of the top 10 least segregated communities for black and second on the list of most segregated cities for Latinos.
I would like to let you know that the government is the reason why Fall River is second on this list. The US Government has “imported” Latinos to live in the government housing set up in this fair city. They are not native to this area, and were bussed in when the state realized the money to be made to house those from other states who could not find affordable housing.
So it is the State and the US Government that created this segregation. The city easily absorbs minorities into its communities, and has a long rich history in doing so. I am afraid that this new moniker will be a black eye to this city and give it a false reputation.
wow we’re #2
