Racist Pee Wee Football Fans Taunt Black Children

In yet another case of blackface racism, a group of white Ohio football fans, including children, taunted their black opponents.? The racist fans, including this white boy on the left,? yelled racial slurs, painted their faces black, beat on frying pans, and wore Afro wigs when their team played a predominantly black opponent.? This is really disturbing to see young children engage in this sort of behavior, which really challenges the whole kids are colorblind argument.? The coach of the predominantly black team, Jeffrey Saffold, called the head of the youth football association for the white team to complain.? Here is a quote from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
“I think this was a way of supporting the team by showing up in bigoted costumes to mock their minority opponent,” Saffold said.
Saffold said he twice previously complained to Hudson coaches about the use of the N-word.
He said after Sunday’s game, he complained to John Elffers, president of the Hudson Hawks Youth Football Association, who sent him a letter apologizing for the fans’ actions.
Elffers, however, said the first complaint he heard came Monday when Saffold called him and said parents of Shaker players were offended. Elffers said he doubted supporters meant to be offensive.
“Their actions, albeit unwise, foolish and insensitive, were meant to be totally supportive and not intended to insult or offend anyone in any way,” Elffers wrote in his letter to Saffold. “We regret what occurred and apologize for any righteous indignation these actions may have caused to the coaches, players, parents and family members of the Shaker football organization.”
What I found very disturbing is not only the actions of these kids, but also the most insincere pathetic apology I have ever seen.? John Elffers tries to argue that these actions were not meant to offend or insult, and I don’t see how else this? behavior could be interpreted.? Using the n-word and painting your face black is insulting, no matter how you try to frame it.? Moreover, in the statement above he is apologizing for the righteous indignation of the black kids and their fans when he needs to be apologizing? for the racist behavior of these white children and their parents.? (FYI–I am not the one who edited out the white child’s face.? The local TV station did that.)? ? ?
This case also seems to follow the typical pattern in these blackface cases.? The whole “we didn’t mean to offend them argument”? is the standard defense in these cases.? However, this clearly should not be taken at face value.? If any news reporters are reading this, I would recommend asking people who makes these claims two questions 1) What did you intend? 2) How do you expect blacks to respond to this sort of behavior?? I’d we love to see these white people’s responses to those questions.? Reporters, and people in general,? need to go a little deeper, and not just accept these sorts of claims.? Let’s not be so quick to let the “we didn’t mean to offend” argument slide.

For this (and other incidents) I would like the perpetrator or ringleader to list, in detail, WHY they chose each and every symbol of their costume. If it wasnt’ meant to OFFEND, then why darken skin, use a rying pan (of all the noise-making arsenal in a common kitchen), use “the n-word,” etc. Listening to them stumble over WHY they chose each element and WHY it’s not offensive would be educational as well as amusing.
It’s offensive when the news media (and others) don’t demand a better apology than the old “I’m sorry IF you were offended.” Um, you wouldn’t be attempting to apologize if I weren’t offended, so I must be offended…

Lyonside, that would be a great question becuase clearly it is not all fun and games as claimed and it would be interesting to see how they would explain themselves. Moreover, it seems to me these half-hearted apologies are not for the sake of the offended minority groups. Instead, the apologies are directed at fellow whites who are aghast at their audacious behavior; most are quick to forgive and forget.
In a related case:recently, here at the U of Illinois, a similar brouhaha has developed over a sorority (Delta Delta Delta) that hosted a party named “Tequila and Tacos” ( or something like that) where men reportedly showed up dressed as Mexican landscapers and women showed up dressed as pregnant maids. There was an outcry from several groups in addition to the latino community and of course the usual boilerplate apology–”We did not mean it to be offenstive, etc.”–was issued.
Interestingly, there is now a angry backlash on the part of some white students because the protest groups are requesting that serious punishments (probation, revocation of sorority house,etc.) are be handed out. Several op-eds and letters to the editor published in the student newspaper (Daily Illini) are arguing things like: “this response is going too far”,”people are too pc,” ” they didn’t mean it,” “punishments will cause more racism,” ” everybody is a little racist, so its ok,” etc. In addition, the conservative newspaper here decided, as a response, to publish an article where every possible stereotype of the various groups that make up the schools pop. was listed for “laughs.”
Gosh, I live in such a sheltered little place here in the Bronx. I can’t fathom anyone I know thinking this is okay or even thinking of doing such a thing.

Small towns in the NE US still are not all that progressive in terms of racial sensitivity. This is one of those subjects, if taught at all in public schools, that are more likely to engender an unintended attitude, much like drug- or sex-education.

I disagree. Athletic competition; the problem lies in people bringing their real world hatreds into the stadium on game day.
Okay, somewhere at a predominently white college in white heartland, a dormitory of black students are having a party.
The male students are dressed as:
-White slavers who have blood on their clothes from all the black people they killed
-Confederate soldiers who have a huge yellow streak up the back of their uniforms
-KKKs who carry a bloodstained rope from numerous lynchings
The female students are dressed as:
-Shrinking white damsels who “cry rape” at the drop of a hat
-Lazy SAHW who hire black women as domestics
-Non-cooking skills ditzs who couldn’t navigate their way to the stove, much less how to cook a decent meal
Anyway, the party is really blasting. The food is great. The champagne is flowing. The students are having fun mocking, jeering and laughing at these wonderful “types” of white people. I mean, isn’t this representative of the average white person? Isn’t that how white people really are in 2006 America?

I doubt many whites would be offended at such a party, Ann. More likely, they would think it was cute.
Whites just don’t really give a flip that some other race hates them. Is that due to privilege? Sure, why not, it’s a nice word that has lost a lot of its meaning.
I am not surprised by the actions of the white team. Their parents obviously feel that it’s ok to raise their children to be bigots. I say atleast they show their true colors, the other team should have just left. Trying to make someone like you will always result in a negative response. So, move on. The sad thing that this contury has been in denial for centuries is that creating laws and prohibitions to stop ignorance didn’t do a thing to better humankind. I say give these kids and their parents what they want, to be left alone. They will grow up to be empty and cold and wonder why , in they are old and gray and sick, the only thing they can remember is being hateful to another humanbeing.
As a young black woman, I have seen and heard about the racist attitudes many whites have and try to hide, and I’m not surprised by anything a white person young or old does. You don’t want to admit it but white communities don’t want blacks in their world. It’s amazing cuz when blacks did have their own townships whites burned and destroyed the townships. How odd, they didn’t want integration but didn’t want blacks to be separated from them either. Then some people say Go back to Africa, ok so why are some racist whites in Africa over there?
I love all of humanity and wish well on all mankind, but to deny the reality is getting harder by each passing year that I live.

I’m with you. If it happened to my kid, they’d be yanked off that playing field immediately. Letting it continue is tacit approval.
Ideally, this is what I’d have loved to happen:
1. Anyone wearing racist/aggressive attire has to leave the visual range of the field (anything that isn’t appropriate for a kids program on TV: i.e. ethnic wigs and makeup, curse words on a poster…- I know posters weren’t used in this example, but I know it happens in other sports) .
2. The referee gives one verbal warning to both players and fans the very first time something happens (or before the game, if there’s a history).
3. The team being harassed stops play immediately after the first incident.
4. If the ref calls it a violation of the verbal warning, the game is called as a forfeit and the harassed team wins.

Of course the behaviour of the children at the game only shows one major thing: White America still hates black America. White America created this garbage of a cesspool racist atmosphere; not black people.
White parents, obviously from the behaviour of the children, still teach their white sons and daughters to hate and revile black people; black people do not. We have better things to do: like staying alive in white racist America; preparing and educating our children for the hateful world in America in which they will live.

The main reason you will not see black students engaging in the behaviour I satirized is because these “stereotypes” are not stereotypes; it is the behaviour of how white America has tried to annihilate and wipe off the face of the Earth every black man, woman and child in America. White America has tried slavery and segregation, and still black people have prevailed.
I don’t have to guess that many white parents still teach their younguns to hate black people. This incident shows it in all its pathetic putrefaction. And it should not come as a surprise to many who live in this country. All the laws on the books cannot wipe away centuries of lies and hate done against black people by white people.
And America’s mistreatment of black people will always be a millstone around her neck.
She knows of all the wrongs she has done to black people, and that is why some white people hate black people. They hate because black people survived abombinations meant to destroy black people.
But, that’s what happens when a race does everything in its power to destroy a race it knows it has wronged grievously. White America will never let go of her desire to wipe black people off the face of the Earth. And one way to keep the racist flames fanned is by white parents continuing to raise racist white children.
That’s why there are still racist white people in America.
Until racist white parents stop teaching their white children to walk around with their heads so far shoved up their rectums, then that day, America will finally stop being the blatant, sick hypocrite that she is.

I grew up in a mostly-white environment for family and school. I think you’d find that most white parents are NOT teaching their kids out and out hate directly…
But their discomfort about race-related issues, their uncertainty and hesitation, and their ingrained double-standards come across to their kids (especially teenagers and young adults) as hypocrisy, and therefore something to disregard, dismantle, or investigate by ridicule.
Add to that the relative segregation of many suburban communities, and there is not enough information to counteract stereotypes. Add the crassness of pop culture in which even minorities feed into the stereotypes, and you have a youth culture in which “reality” shows are as far from reality as possible, yet claim to portray the way race works in America.
It’s sins of ommission, over sins of commission, that are more insidious and prevalent, and therefore harder to overcome.

And as long as white and black America continue to be segregated from each other the racism will continue unabated.
And ingrained stereotypes are hard to destroy when people are too apathetic and lazy to challenge them.
A white mother sitting in her car with her child, upon seeing a black person approach the car, when all of a sudden she starts locking the doors sends a more sinister message to her child than all the “Nigger this”, or “Nigger that” comments. A white parent in an elevator who pulls their child closer to them when a black person enters the elevator sends a message to the child that a black human is less than human, a monster to be avoided at all costs.
Actions speak louder than words.
And there are many ways to “teach” racism.
And words are not the only way.
Just because a white person does not burn a cross on a black person’s lawn (sin of commission), does not mean that on a daily basis they can not send racist signals to their children of the continued devaluation of black Americans (sins of omission).
Yes, this is harder to overcome.
But, if AMERICA wants to continue, she, and by she, I mean eveyone in this country, had better get their acts together.

It past high time for white America to stop treating her black citizens like strangers in their own country. Contrary to what SOME people out there in America think, black people get tired, worn and put upon like any other human in this world.

Negro problem. As if it was all the fault of black people that racism existed, came about and is still in existence. It’s all the fault of those aggravating, bothersome black people that stereotypes were created against them centuries ago. It’s all the fault of black people that white people centuries ago started the stereotypes of coon/jiggaboo/rastus/whore/Jezebel/slut/mammy/sambo/unrapeble wench/nigger/beast rapist/pickaninny/darky/Sapphire/welfare queens (thank you Ronald Reagan)—-need I go on?
Black people are sick of racial profiling/followed around stores when we have money to purchase goods/pulled over on the flimsiest of traffic stops/driving while black/dying while black/vilified while black/looked at as freaks of nature: “Oh,you’re so articulate. Oh,you’re so nice, quiet and studious for a black person.”/having to be twice, no three times more qualified than everyone else just to get into the door.
Black people did not create this racist condition in America. If you want to be realistic about the “race problem” in America it was never black people. White people were the race problem, and it certainly worked in their best interests to put all the burder of race on black people.
There is NOTHING in this world stopping white people from acknowledging and treating with respect and equality black people.
And running to all the lily-white suburbs, running to all the all-white rural towns, running unto the ends of the Earth will not eradicate a problem that was started by white people.
The onus should not always be on black people. White people can work to make this a better country just like black people.
Hell, we aren’t the only ones who can give a damn whether this country swims, or sinks.
And we should not be the only ones to shoulder he burden of always trying to get this country to live up to its supposed ideals.
We black people tire, bleed, cry, suffer, and rejoice just like anyone else in this country.
We are no less human than whites, Asians, Latinos, Arabs, Native Americans or the “New” mixed-race people (who if you hear them tell it, they are something new on the scene, when race-mixing has been going on since time immemorial).
Black people would like a little more help from white people, and I am not just talking about two or three white people you can count on one hand. Not to mention some help from all the other races in America in working to attempt to end this plague of racism that has held this country in its deadly grip for centuries.
We would like to be finally one day be treated as the citizens of this country that we are.
And I do not think that is asking too much.

You’re on the money with your examples, and I think we agree – the subtle racism is FAR more dangerous (because it can be ignored, justified, and excused) than outright racist behavior or action. But I also think that Black Americans have to unify with other groups – minorities cannot be scrambling for the scraps of political and socioconomic power and influence, we have to demand it of ourselves and each other, and work for it. It’s all of us (white folks too) in it together.
Just for the record, I may be one of those “New” mixed people, but I’ve always known that I’m not unusual or new, except to other people who are just clueless or completely isolated from the real world ;) I’m black, and I’m white, and I’m both, and I’m neither, and it’s not the first or the last way I ID myself. One of the reasons I’ve joined SWIRL (all kinds of blended people, families, religions, cultures, etc.) is that as a black/white biracial person, I’m common and boring.
Black people have no problem with working with non-black people on issues that affect everyone in this country.
From what I see, non-black people are not lining up to work with black people on issues that affect ALL non-white people.
On the issue of jobs being taken by illegal immigrants. In the media it’s “Immigrants work jobs that no one else will work. Immigrants work jobs that black people will not work.” Slap in the face. But, black America has had slaps in the face for as long as we have been in this country. The racist implication is that black people are lazy and do not want to work. Many black people do the same types of work that immigrants do:
-service indusrty
-construction
-janitorial services
But no one seems to see that.
White people have declared Asians as the “Model Minority”, as more studious than black people, more industrious than black people. And many Asians sit around saying nothing to challenge this lie. They are more than willing to be seen as the “good minority” in the eyes of white people instead of attacking a lie that disregards, disrespects and insults black people. Asians are no more model minority then me or any other black person in America.
And in answer to your statement about black people working with other non-black people, we do work with them and attempt to work with them. But I do not see where they show much initiative to work with black people.
Here where I live, a young black man has worked over the years to build a name for himself in the black community to come to the aid of black people facing injustice. And he has come through time and time again. He has also come forward for non-black people who’ve faced injustice and he has shown himself and his organization admirably. When issues confront black people, I do not see any non-black people come forward to speak/work in solidarity with us. At least not here. Everyone seems to want to see black people go out there and put our lives on the line not only for ourselves, but for everyone else, but the voices and faces of non-black people are strangely silent. And I disagree with you. The problem is not with black people. The problem is with non-blacks who do not want to work with black people. It does not take a genius to see that many of them have bought into the lie that blacks are to be shunned at all costs. Whatever you do, do not work with black people; but, on the other hand, always expect them, like fools, to always come to your rescue.
Yes, we black people are used to standing up for others as well as for ourselves. It comes with the territory. If it was not for us (and a few white people) slavery would still exist, there would be no civil rights, there would be no civil liberties for ANYONE. Because of black people EVERYONE in this country has civil rights.
When some issue of racial concern affects Latinos, Asians, etc., I am more likely to see black people speak up in their defense. But, on the other hand, when it is an issue that affects black people only, I do not see Asians, Latinos, Native Americans, Arabs, etc. speaking up in defense of black people. Obviously they have taken the nod from white America to heart: “You are better than those black people. If you wish to continue to curry favor with us white people, then you had better not ever think of aligning yourselves with them.
And on the issue of “new mixed-blood”. Yes, many so-called mixed blood people born after 1967 see themselves more as aligned with the white community than they do the black community. They are a buffer between white America and black America. And many of them see this. And as for the crumbs of AA, etc., well let’s just face facts. Everyone else has eaten at the trough of that pie and the pie is more than just gone; there is nothing but an empty dry plate left with no scraps or whatever for black people.
Black people work with non-black people.
We do it all the time.
But expecting non-blacks to work with us, don’t see much of that happening.
When Central Americans come to this country, they are given the option to classify themselves as either hispanic/latino OR white. Many of them chose white. Doesn’t take a genius to see why they do that. In their minds they have already made their decision as to whose side they are on, and I do not see them seeking out building coalitions with black people, the way I have seen black people attempt to work with them and other non-black people.
Until I see Asians speak in protest against a black woman killed in her car by trigger happy cops, I will have a very hard time believing that Asians want to work with black people.
Until I see Native Americans speak up loudly against white cops beat a black woman senseless because she wanted their badge numbers when they would not take her abusive boyfriend in for battery, and they instead ARREST her and take her in, then I will have a very hard time believing that Native Americans want to work with black people.
Until I see Arabs say that black people have just as much right to the benefits of all that this country has to offer its citizens, I will have a very hard time believing that Arabs want to work with black people.
Until all those “Honorary Whites” decide to wake up and see what white America has done in building enmity between non-black people and black people, I will have an extremely hard time believing that they want to work with black people.
Until non-black people let go of the desire to always see themselves as better than black people, then there will never be solidarity between blacks and non-blacks. White America is all too happy to see this. It keeps the old divide and conquer going, becasue if non-blacks were to reach out to us the way we have reached out to them then the status quo of this country would be greatly challenged.
But, not much chance of that happening.
Yes black people can work with non-black people.
But, until I see more non-black people let go of the lies that they are to allow themselves to be accepted by white people and that it is in their best interests to disregard black people, I will not have much faith in anyone non-black seeking solidarity with black people anytime soon.
When non-black people realize that it is in their best interests to work WITH black people, then and only then will they start being able to challenge this country to live up to its ideals.
Black people cannot do it all by themselves.
Until then, expect the same’ol same ‘ol.

It pisses me off that every time a racial incident occurs, people in this country say: “we would never think that in this day and age we would have to talk to our kids about this Racism never left our society. We still have hate groups in this country such as the Ku Klux Klan and Skin Heads. So why is it so hard for main stream America to recognize this? When we argue how important Affirmative Action is in this country, why do we keep getting shot down by main stream America? And the children are the most at risk.
Where are all the black conservatives who taunt and talk about Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton and call them others as trouble makers? Or when they accuse them of holding black people back? Is Ann having grandiose visions of whipping white people into picking cotton? Shit like these morons in blackface prove its a long way to go, but you probably won’t get the opportunity to get your payback on white people, because racial divisions, on a larger scale, are improving every day. Sometimes when the police pull people over it makes the news.

Why some experts say Bellaire is one of the worst in the state when it comes to who its police officers are pulling over and searching?
But most times it doesnt.
In fact, thousands of drivers are questioned during routine traffic stops.
But is it just your bad luck to get stopped, or do some departments single out certain people?
Bellaire, Bellaire stands out. Bellaires the only town in Harris County if I was a minority, I wouldnt drive through it. Paul Kubosh is a defense lawyer whos handled thousands of cases in traffic courts all over Harris County.
If you go to Bellaire, it seems to me in my observations over the years, it seems disproportionately its minorities who are stopped, said Kubosh.
Bellaire is a community whose residents are 85 percent white and most are upper income.
But who gets pulled over?
Mostly out-of-towners the day 11 News was at traffic court.
And according to the departments own data, of the 8,955 drivers they pulled over last year, 2,597 were white, but 3858 were Hispanic, 1863 were black.
To find out more we tracked down another lawyer.
The Bellaire area has been especially problematic. Molly Totman in Austin—along with an economist—co-author an annual study of who police in Texas are pulling over.
Texas now has a racial profiling law. Police now have to keep track of who they pull over by race. The data might show if theyre going easier on Anglos than they are on blacks or Latinos.
To more accurately determine if officers were more suspicious of minorities, the researchers looked not just at the race of the person pulled over, but which drivers the officers then asked to consent to a search of their vehicle.
And what did the data show about Bellaire?
Black drivers were nearly 12 times more likely to be pulled over and asked for a consent search. Latinos were almost 8 times more likely to be pulled over and asked for a consent search than white drivers, said Totman.
Blacks and Latinos are far more likely to be searched than whites.
And Bellaire, they said, was one of the worst in the state, but hardly the exception.
Houston PD is almost four times more likely to search blacks.
Harris County, Conroe, Galveston and Fort Bend all showed varying degrees of searching blacks and Latino drivers more often than whites.
Im not making claims about Houston Police Department or Bellaire Police Department but its just unusual the number of people in the Houston area stopped and cited and searched are people of color, said Totman.
We dont know what Houston PD thinks about all this, it never responded to questions, but Bellaire did respond.

Bellaires police chief not only answered questions, but he also played a supervisor review tapes of traffic stops.
We monitor our officers performance on a constant basis. We train them in areas of racial sensitivity. Chief Randall Mack said.
He said that every day thousands of cars pass through Bellaire on the Loop.
He said thoroughfares like Bissonnet connect Bellaire to some of the most crime-ridden and racially diverse neighborhoods of southwest Houston.
It makes perfect sense if a business in our community calls and says a person of whatever racial descent just committed a crime and they just left in a certain type of vehicle, if we see that vehicle, that we stop the vehicle, said Mack.
Convincing?
Maybe not to the departments critics who say by all appearancesand the data—your race matters when youre behind the wheel.
The data used in this report is from 2004.
So far, early data for 2005 show Bellaire police searching fewer blacks and Latinos but still at a rate two to four times that of whites.
By the way, Bellaire police tell us the racial make-up of their patrol force is nearly half non white. “

And as to the ever-widening racial divide that is forming, there already is a huge Grand Canyon of a divide as it should be apparent to all who have eyes to acknowledge it.
America has a time to reign like all civilizations. When her time ends, it will end. No one knows. But, it will end. Rome ruled the world, once.

I know America will never apologize to black America for all the wrongs done to them. That is a reality. I know America will never truly learn to work and live in equality with her black citizens. An even more harsher reality. But, another reality is that it is better to confront the past, rather than to continue running from it.
And black people will not be the ones to cause the downfall of America. Oh no, that won’t be on us. Black people will not be the first race of people to be wronged who did not get justice acknowledged. But, there is an old adage, nevertheless a true one, that “justice slumbers but never sleeps….Oftentimes in slumbering, merit lies unrewarded for a time.”
But, justice will prevail.
Maybe not in my time, but it will prevail.
No, black people are not the people you have to fear, America, LL.
“Payback” comes in many shapes and forms. Sometimes it can be seen; sometimes it cannot. History, and time, always in the end catches up to all that a country has done. And history always shows up to bill a civilization when it is least prepared to pay the bill it is presented.
So, take heart. Black people will never “enslave” white America. You have to cast your fears in another direction for America’s enslavement. Karma comes back in how you treat, or better yet, mistreat, all those around you. If a country is strong enough to dish it out, a country must be prepared in the end to be strong enough to take it. And you do get back what you put out.
